Our Services

The Sultan Qaboos University Hospital Pharmacy Department provides a wide range of services which includes the dispensing of the correct, most effective, safe and most economic medication to a properly identified patient at the appropriate time with sufficient written and verbal patient information. The pharmacy services also disseminate appropriate and unbiased drug, poison and disease related information to patients, medical stuff and allied health care professionals. Furthermore, the pharmacy also use appropriate sterile technique to prepare some of the products which are not commercially available such as drugs used in treatment of cancer (cytotoxic drugs) and intravenous nutrition.
There are 6 different sections within the pharmacy. These are:

Administration

The administration is responsible to assign pharmacy representation to various hospital committees, ensure adequate staff levels in all areas and maintain high standards by enforcing pharmacy policies and procedures. It also ensures health, safety and welfare of staff members.

 

Out-patient

The core function of this section is to dispense outpatient prescriptions and prescriptions for discharged patients while maintaining medication safety and distribution efficiency in all pharmacy locations. Out-patient staffs are also responsible for the counseling and education of patients to appropriately follow their drug therapy regimens. This section is considered one of the busiest sections within the pharmacy as it dispenses approximately 90,000 prescriptions each year. In addition to the main outpatient pharmacy there is also FAMCO pharmacy, A/E pharmacy and student clinic pharmacy.

 

In-patient /Clinical pharmacy

Clinical Pharmacists work in teams with other health care providers to promote rationale drug therapy that is safe, appropriate and cost effective. They are responsible for regular reviewing of in-patient medication charts and patient files. This is to ensure the safety and effectiveness of prescribed medicines. They contact physician and provide appropriate options when they have a concern about the choice or safety of the prescribed medicines. They also answer specific requests from medical and nursing staff regarding different medication or administration methods and provide patients with the required information related to their medicines.

 

Medicine information

Pharmacist at medicine information services (MIS) answer approximately 600 queries each year. Most of these queries are patient specific with respect to adverse drug effects, drug information, drug dose/administration, drug use in pregnancy and lactation etc. MIS coordinate the process of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) and poison reports which are later sent to Ministry of Health. MIS issues the pharmacy bulletin and the ADR news letter, both contain relevant drug related information to the health care providers. MIS plays a vital role in the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee meetings through the provision of evidence based drug information which in turn leads to the addition/deletion of new drugs to the hospital formulary.

 

Aseptic Preparation

The section is responsible for the following activities according to standard operational procedures:

• Compounding of sterile and non sterile preparations such as extemporaneous preparation, eye drops and intravenous drugs.

• Preparation of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)  aseptically which is needed by patients who cannot take oral food, preterm babies, malnourished, cancer, Intensive Care and surgical patients.

• Aseptic Compounding of cytotoxic drugs for cancer patients, bone marrow transplantation patients, haematology and rheumatology cases.

• Repacking of tablets and powder for inpatient and outpatient. Use specialized training of staff and student from different institutions.

 

Pharmacy Sub-store

Pharmacy sub-store is the link between the hospital main stores and the pharmacy department. It plays an important role in ensuring the availability and smooth distribution of general pharmaceutical, intravenous fluids, narcotics and psychotropic drugs to hospital wards and units. In addition, it also facilitates the control of expiries and assists in the estimation process of items and quantities to be purchased by participating in the evaluation process.
